stuck on a Plateau? Why Adding Weight Isn’t Always the Answer
By Jean-Claude Mobwete | JC Activity
There is a common sight in gyms across Croydon and Purley: the dedicated lifter who shows up every Monday, does the exact same bench press routine, lifts the exact same weight, and looks exactly the same year after year.
It’s frustrating. You are putting in the effort, but the results have stopped.
The natural reaction is to try and force progress by adding more weight. You pile on the plates, your form breaks down, you use momentum to cheat the rep, and suddenly—you’re injured.
The "Control" Factor At JC Activity, we break plateaus differently. We don't just ask "how much can you lift?"; we ask "how well can you lift it?"
If you are stuck, the answer usually lies in the 'C' of our PCV framework: Control. Instead of adding 5kg and swinging the weight, try slowing your rep down. Take 3 seconds to lower the weight. Pause at the bottom. Explode up.
What Happens?
Muscle Activation: You can’t cheat a slow rep. Your target muscles are forced to do the work.
Joint Safety: By removing momentum, you remove the stress on your joints (crucial for long-term health).
Growth: That burning sensation? That’s the stimulus for growth you’ve been missing.
Don't let your ego dictate your workout. If you are stuck in a rut in Wallington or Waddon, it’s time to stop training heavy and start training smart.
